The use of animals to assist in therapy dates back centuries. Studies of pet/animal therapy have shown repeatedly that exposure to animals helps improve communication, self-esteem, motivation, and social interactions. Specific research regarding animal use in therapy revealed that the animals augmented speech therapy by improved clinical outcomes, decreased length of treatment plans, increased vocabulary, increased spontaneous language usage, increased attention to task, and improved mood.
General observations of a variety of therapy sessions indicated the animal’s presence made sessions more pleasurable and productive for clients. In addition, studies have also indicated that children with Autism benefit tremendously from pet therapy. A study based on children with Autism, by Redefer and Goodman (1999), demonstrated that when a dog was used as part of a child’s therapy, a strong positive impact resulted by increased appropriate social behaviors and decreased self-absorption.
Rabon Communication Enhancement has observed this same phenomenon with our clients. Our mascot, Jilly Bean, is in attendance daily. Children who were once terrified of dogs, have overcome their fears, interact with the animals, and love Jilly. When an animal is present, we have noted that our clients talk more! Any given day at Communication Enhancement you will find more than one of the following creatures: fish, turtles, dogs, talking parrots, or kittens. Several children who were at first anxious or reluctant around animals, now have pets of their own at home. Our clients love the animals! At Communication Enhancement, we are constantly trying new, exciting ideas to increase our clients’ communication skills!!
